The response_times metric is a Trend, which is useful for tracking the distribution of a value over time. It provides standard deviation, average, min, max, and percentiles, giving you a much richer picture of performance than just the average.
The orders_placed Counter will simply increment by 1 for each successful order. If you have 100 successful orders, its count will be 100.
The order_value Gauge will report the current value of active orders. If an order is placed for $50 and then another for $100, the gauge will report 100. If an order is completed and removed, the gauge would decrease. It’s best suited for values that can change dynamically rather than accumulate.
The checkout_success_rate Rate metric is designed for boolean (true/false) or numeric (1/0) inputs. When true is added, it increments the numerator and denominator. When false is added, it only increments the denominator. This allows k6 to automatically calculate the success rate (numerator / denominator).

For tracking the value of orders, a Gauge might seem appropriate if you’re thinking about the sum of currently active order values. However, if you want to track the total value of all orders placed during the test, you would likely use a Counter and add the order value to it. In the example, orderValue.add(orderPayload.price * orderPayload.quantity) is adding the value to the gauge, meaning it will represent the value of the last order placed if no other logic modifies it.
